More Visitors...We are so Lucky!

As you know, after our group of friends left, we immediately picked up Jeff's family (his mom, sister, brother, aunt, and cousin).  We were so excited to hang out with them throughout their time here.  After our lunch, walking tour, and quick pint...we left them in London.  Haha, that sounds funny!  They were going to explore London and surrounding areas a bit more before heading up to Nottingham for a couple days of their trip.  They were able to see the big attractions in London, Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath, and another small village.  They were busy!  It was fun to be able to talk about these places with them because we had been there before!

They got into Nottingham on Thursday, and I was able to take them to the famous, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem.  It was so busy, and I was bummed because the upstairs (which is the coolest part) was all reserved, so I could not show that part off.  We enjoyed a great lunch, and then headed up to the castle.
(L-R) His aunt, Susan; sister, Michelle; cousin, Nathan; mom, Lori; and brother, Matthew
Always can count on Michelle (my sister-in-law) to take a goofy picture with me!

It was the time of year that the castle just had boring paintings, and not the awesome war exhibits like it did in the fall.  We were able to explore the outside area, and point out different buildings and sights from afar.  We headed inside, and walked around the building.  I was able to visit my favorite exhibit (all about the riots), and reflected that it would be the last time I would go in there before moving home! I took it all in, appreciating it all.

Afterwards, we headed for a quick tour around town, grabbed some groceries, and then headed back to our flat so we could hang out until dinner time.  They had all been on the move for the last 5 days, so we chilled for a bit as I made dinner.  We ate dinner, caught up, and enjoyed the relaxing evening.

The next day, they headed to Liverpool, and I stayed back as I had a few things to take care of.  We all met up on Saturday to explore Nottingham a bit more.  They all went to the Galleries of Justice, and I stayed behind as I had already been to the attraction twice.  Jeff went with them, and I think they enjoyed the history side of things.  It sounds like they had a bit of a different experience where they were able to recreate a trial in the courtroom, which sounded really interesting.  I think a few of them were participants, which would have been funny to see! Jeff should be writing this post, so he can tell you more about the experience!
Siblings reunited after quite a long time
In the entryway of Pitcher & Piano

I met up with everyone at Pitcher and Piano, which is the church that was converted into a bar.  One of my favorite places to grab a pint and/or lunch.  And we grabbed both!  Afterwards, we headed to another pub which is right on the canal, called The Canalhouse.  It is really neat, as there is a boat garage that goes through the restaurant.  There is even a boat inside!  Next up, we explored the caves of Nottingham.  Nottingham is actually known as the City of Caves.  This is something we had not done before, so we were excited to do a new tourist attraction in our own city! It was a 45 minute tour, exploring the caves.  We were even given little hard hats, which we took advantage of! It was interesting to see hear and see what the caves were used for in the past.  It was like another world down there!
Blurry shot...but having fun underground!  One of the shopping centres was built on top of the caves!

 Digging for bones!
 Our sweet hard hats!

We ended our night taking everyone to one of our favorite Indian restaurants.  Yummy! We hung out at our house later that night.  It was the last night in England for his brother, as he was heading back the following day.  Everyone headed back to London with him, as his aunt and cousin were flying out on Monday.  They enjoyed a few more attractions, like the London Eye and Wimbledon.  Their tour looked fantastic! They were able to see some things we were obviously not allowed or able to see during our time at Wimbledon, so it was fun hearing about their experience.  Jeff's mom and sister are staying a couple extra days in Nottingham, so I'll post about our adventures on the next post!

On to the next adventure...

At a Glance: Burgers. Pottery. Pubs. Football

Sorry for the lack of posts from us. Boy, have we been busy this month. Can you believe it is already the end of October? We have had a couple "normal" weeks around here.  Jeff has been working a lot, so he has been really busy lately.  We celebrated our 2nd anniversary two weeks ago.  There was monsoon-like weather so instead of going out, we watched our wedding video, ate pizza, had a glass of wine, and many many desserts.  We properly celebrated the following Friday by heading out to Annie's Burger Shack and Freehouse, which was the best burger I have had since we moved here.  Ahhh-mazing! The lady who owns it is from New England.
 Best two years ever!

This past week, I was able to go with a few friends to the Denby Pottery Factory & Shops (Pottery made in the Derbyshire area, around where Jeff works) on Thursday.  We ate at the little cafe, and then shopped. I finally found a teapot to bring home! It was almost addicting to see all the different types of pottery as well as the different pieces. I wanted to buy a lot, but settled for a beautiful little teapot.  I still have my eye on the cake stand...
My teapot's new spot in our flat!

This past weekend was a great one, as we went out with some friends on Friday night.  We met up with our friends in Nottingham to hit up Pitcher & Piano (the church-pub) and headed out to a few other places.  It was a fun night out, although I felt super old hanging around bars with "kids" (drinking age, 18).
My friend, Jo and I, at Pitcher & Piano

Saturday came quickly, and we headed to The City Ground to watch our first "football" match. AKA, American friends, SOCCER. Our friends, Andrew & Julie, came with us to the game. We stopped at a local pub that was on the canal near our house. It was a great environment inside, although we ate outside.  The pub had a boat garage, so part of the canal ran through the restaurant and boats were inside. Very cool place.

Anyway--we went to the stadium to watch the Nottingham Forest (Tricky Trees) play the Blackburn Rovers,  Jeff bought a Nottingham Forest scarf, grabbed our tickets, and headed to our seats.  We were up high, but we had a really good view.  There were over 27,000 people at the game.
 View from our seats

It was a great environment, although the atmosphere was nothing compared to American ball games.  There was not a whole lot of music, announcing, or even much on the "jumbo" screens.  Although they didn't have the flashiness, like our American sports do...I felt like people were there for just the raw sport, and not all of the other pieces of entertainment, which was cool.  The crowd was REALLY into the game, especially the opposing team who ended up whooping us 3-1. I felt because there was not so much entertainment, people truly paid attention to the sport itself.  And speaking of football (this time, American Football).  It was great to see American Football being played on our live TV screen this weekend, as Detroit and Atlanta played over here in London.  Tickets were super expensive and of course, sold out...but that would have definitely been a fun experience.  Either way--I think Jeff was a happy camper when he could watch it on a real TV and not a computer screen.
Group shots!

All-in-all, it was a great experience and one we checked off of the bucket list.  We can't believe that we are running out of time to accomplish some of these events, places, etc. that we want to before we move home.  It was crazy to us that we are already planning our 2015 trips!

Busy week ahead, hope to post again soon!

Onto the next adventure...

Living the Royal Lifestyle

After our great visits to both Glasgow and Stirling we headed off to Edinburgh.  Not a new place for Jeff as he had visited here for work before.  I was super excited to check another Scottish city off my "To Visit" list.  Not sure if I mentioned this in a previous post, but my parents planned their trip partially around the fact that Jeff had Monday off for a bank holiday over here.  They were able to spend some more quality time with him, and we were able to get a bigger trip out of the weekend since we had 3 full days! Which meant...2 full days in Edinburgh.

We got in Edinburgh late and enjoyed the Fringe Festival that was going on during our couple days in Edinburgh.  It was just by luck that this huge comedy and street performer festival was going on the same time we were there.  We were wondering why it was so hard to find a reasonable hotel in the city centre. We were able to see quite a few performers and give them a few pounds.  Jeff and I have a rule that if you watch a street performer for more than a minute, you should give them money because they provided you with some sort of entertainment and they deserve to be paid.  So needless to say, we coughed up a few more pounds than we normally do because we were enjoying the acts so much.
 Comedy and street performers

We grabbed a quick dinner in the place with the least amount of wait time due to the large crowds.  We attempted to walk near the Edinburgh Castle to see it close up at night, but we were unable to due to a performance happening nearby.  We made it back to the hotel (well, actually we rented a small apartment) and rested before we had yet another long day of touristic attractions!

Since Jeff had visited Edinburgh before, he had already visited the castle, so he didn't feel the need to visit it again.  My mom, dad, and I walked to the castle and spent about three and a half hours exploring and enjoying the castle grounds. We really enjoyed the different rooms, reading facts about the castle, and spending time with one another.  I think my dad could have spent a whole day in the castle as he was loving all of the history.  Who knew he was such a history buff? I think one of our favorite things, or at least one of my favorite things was the view from the castle.  We were able to see the coast, islands, and of course the town of Edinburgh.
 Edinburgh Castle
I really liked this part of the castle. Very sweet!
The castle offered a lot of different exhibits and had some interesting rooms. The second picture had a variety of weapons hanging on the walls.
This was one of my favorite sections of the castle: Prisoners of War
 Some snapshots of the view!

The rations of food prisoners received. Note the Americans were thought of as pirates and did not receive as much food as the others.
After the POW area, we went to jail...

We met up with Jeff after our castle visit, and grabbed a bite to eat at a local pub.  We all explored the menu, and then headed down the Royal Mile to the Holyrood Palace.  I think when we all think of castles, we think of what a palace looks like. Gold, finest finishings, and beautiful portraits on the wall.  I think "HollyWOOD" helped us believe that.  It was nice for my parents to see the difference that castles here were really used for war and safety whereas palaces are the fancy decorated places where royalty lives. Least that is my take on it.  Anyways, we were unable to take pictures inside the palace, but each room was decorated beautifully.  We each had a free audio guide, so we were able to learn more about the uses of each of the rooms where the Queen of Scotland lived.
At No. 1 pub.
The palace up close.  Look for the picture from King Arthur's Seat where you can see the bird's eye view.
 A photo in front!
 The courtyard inside the palace.
An former cathedral stood here attached to the palace.
Outside the palace grounds, you can see King Arthur's Seat (hillside in the background)

Afterwards we walked around the city, grabbed a milkshake, and headed back to take naps...well the boys took naps.  We grabbed dinner together, and then Jeff and I went out exploring solo.  We walked around the city, snapped some photos of the buildings lit up at night, and stopped in a whiskey bar called...Whiski Bar to have a pint and Jeff had a glass of whiskey.  There was a local band playing, and they were pretty good.
Edinburgh at night

The next morning we woke up with our walking shoes on and heading up King Arthur's Seat to see the beautiful views of Edinburgh.  Dad, Jeff, and I trailed up the hillside to get to a smaller peak. My mom sat this one out as she had hurt her knee in a minor walking accident.  No worries...she was just sore. Walking up the hillside only took about an hour or so.  We didn't make it the the largest peak as I didn't have the right shoes on. Hmmm...yet another pattern here. Fashion over comfort.
You can see how much of a drop it was!
 The Holyrood Palace
 We made it!
 Great shot of my dad
The walk down is always harder than the walk up...
Jeff's "Living on the edge"

We had a great walk up to the top, and headed back down to get on the motorway to head home.  Normally the drive would be about 5 hours, but we hit a lot of construction and it took about 6.5 hours.  We were all ready to get out of the car, but definitely enjoyed the views of the coast.  We even stopped to snap a few pictures.  My parents were amazed at the fact that nothing was built along the coast as it was all farming fields and undeveloped land.  It was just a shock, as in the states you can't find a spot on the beach where there aren't restaurants, shopping, or rows of housing.  All in all, a great first weekend traveling.  We accomplished so much in a short amount of time.

Onto the next adventure...
